If you are thinking about returning to college, but have been away from college or high school for awhile, and you're uncertain if you can handle college coursework, let me guarantee that you can! White Mountains Community College (formerly NH Community College-Berlin) provides services that will help you on the road to academic success. These services are available through our Academic Support Center (ASC).
The mission of the center is to offer high-quality, student-centered educational and support services that lead to a stronger foundation in academic mastery and successful employment. Staffed by professional educators, the center provides academic skills assistance to the North Country region. Staff is dedicated to promoting a responsive learning environment for all students and North Country residents who need academic assistance.
You might be wondering who uses the Center. Is it only for students who are failing a course? No, the students who use the Center, and the reason they do so, vary widely. Students who need academic support, or who want to advance more rapidly in an academic area, may contact the Center. Sometimes we find an average student, who wants to earn an above-average grade in a course, accessing the Center. Regardless of the reason for utilizing the Center, appropriate programs will be designed to meet individual needs. The Center provides academic tutoring, study skills workshops, and access to PLATOWEB, a computer-driven tutorial program. Students can access programs in any subject area including basic skills and supplemental coursework. Students also benefit from computer programs in math, English, reading, basic literacy, and study skills. Tutoring and mentoring is available one-on-one or as part of a group. Very often, you will see students working together, assisting one another in academic areas. Assistance can also be provided in the areas of personal enrichment and career building.
White Mountains Community College students, as well as Granite State College students, have full access to all of the services in the Academic Support Center. The ASC also works closely with area high schools, providing supplemental instruction and alternative credit on PLATOWEB. Services are free to students enrolled in credit courses. The same services are available to members of the community on a fee for service basis.
A variety of learning resources are also available. These resources include assistive technology for students with a documented disability; study skills instruction; Internet resources; presentation preparation (including PowerPoint); and open computer labs. Math, reading, and writing labs are scheduled at various times each Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
