The Value and Importance of the NHCC Berlin Student Senate

Katharine Eneguess, President of the New Hampshire Community College - Berlin

The holiday season tends to bring out the best in people. It is the time of year when people seem to want to give the most, especially to those who are less fortunate. With the holiday season just barely behind us, I would like to take the time to commend one of the most active groups on the NHCC-Berlin campus for the hard work that they do around the holiday season and throughout the whole academic year. NHCC-Berlin's Student Senate worked tremendously hard during the fall semester (and they have big plans for the spring!) to help make the campus and the surrounding communities a better place for all of us!

The Student Senate here at your local community college serves as the governing group for the student body, with representatives elected from each curriculum. These representatives accept the challenges of leadership, authority, and responsibility in dealing with their peers, faculty, and administration. The Student Senate provides experiences that promote the general welfare of every student on campus and members of the surrounding communities at large. Through fund-raising efforts, they manage to make education and student activities more accessible than they would be otherwise.

This past semester, the NHCC-Berlin's Student Senate helped our academic programs in many ways. They purchased five TI-89 calculators for student use; donated funds to the Nursing program to help out with its spring pinning ceremony; and sent their Vice-President, Crystal Boswell, to a Leadership Workshop in Claremont. The Student Senate will be making our Berlin campus a safer place as well. They have voted to purchase three AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) to be mounted in the academic building as well as our Child Care Center on Twitchell Lane.

The Student Senate here at the Community College has also made many contributions to the community. They donated $1,500 to Tri-County CAP and had their donation matched by an anonymous donor, for a total of $3,000; they gave $1,500 to the “Little Folks Christmas Shoppe”, and $1,400 to the Salvation Army to purchase 70 $20 gift certificates for teenagers ages 14-16. The Student Senate didn't forget about the 'little ones'! They hosted a Christmas "Time to Chill" in which Santa himself visited children to whom he gave coloring books and crayons.

In addition to the fundraising and donating, Berlin's Student Senate found time to provide some fun activities for students and faculty and staff to get to know each other. They hosted a free barbeque for everyone on campus; purchased tickets for a Manchester Monarchs game to be sold to students, faculty and staff at a discounted price; purchased Disney on Ice tickets to be sold to students, faculty, and staff at a discounted price; and hosted a free bowling night at the Berlin Bowling Center for students, faculty, and staff with refreshments included. They purchased three hexagon picnic tables for student use; had the pool table in the Student Lounge re-covered and bought new pool sticks; and donated $200 to our Littleton Academic Center to purchase drinks and snacks for the students there.

As you can see, our Student Senate here at NHCC-Berlin has had a productive and busy fall semester. With the spring semester just around the corner, the Student Senate will be at it again: fundraising, planning, organizing, and surely having some fun as well!

On behalf of everyone at NHCC-Berlin, I would like to publicly thank our Student Senate for everything that they do for all of our student body, our campus, and our surrounding communities!
