College Conducts Survey for Possible Name Change

This past July, New Hampshire passed legislation that approved permitting self-governance of the Community College System through its Board of Trustees. The State's community colleges now have a level of independence similar to other colleges and universities within New Hampshire, where many day to day operating decisions can be made on a local level. Along with that independence comes a new name. The New Hampshire Community Technical College System is now the Community College System of New Hampshire. This has opened the door for the System's seven colleges to consider changing their names too.

Back in 1966, when the College first opened its door, educational opportunities were geared to vocational/technical areas. In the past 41 years, the College has evolved into a comprehensive community technical college, with transfer opportunities and articulation agreements for its students to continue their education at four year institutions across the state and the country.

The CCSNH Chancellor and Board of Trustees support the Colleges considering name changes and have set some boundaries. They ask that each college consider the regional "claims" of the other community colleges and that the colleges actively engage their internal and external college communities in this process. Also, the words "community college" must be included in each proposed name. Ultimately, the name change will be approved by the Board of Trustees, as well as by the Governor and Executive Council.

A new name is a huge and important decision that will affect the campus for years to come. Therefore, NHCC Berlin would like public input and asks for people to give some serious thought to a new name and take into consideration the main area that the College services: Route 25 and north, to the Canadian border. The main campus is in Berlin and the College's academic centers are in Conway, Littleton, and Woodsville. The College hopes that a new name will be inclusive of most of this part of New Hampshire.
