NHCTC Spring Scholarships and Awards Reception
The New Hampshire Community College at Berlin (NHCTC) recently held its annual Spring Awards Reception and a large number of NHCTC students received recognition for their academic achievement and athletic contributions to the college. Over $18,000 and numerous awards were presented to over 25 students who are continuing their education at CCSNH-Berlin.
Many of the scholarships that are given out are made possible by the generosity of local organizations and individuals. Prior to the announcement of the scholarships and awards Financial Director Jackie Catello made a special point of recognizing the college's benefactors. Mrs. Vera Smith generously donates to the nursing program in memory of her husband Edgar C. Smith and in her own name. Also recognized for their ongoing support were the CCSNH-Berlin Student Senate, the CCSNH-Berlin Nursing Faculty, Mr. & Mrs. Paul Drouin, the Woodlands Credit Union, Androscoggin Valley Hospital, and the Berlin Kiwanis Club. These individuals provide matching funds for two state scholarship programs - the Nursing Leveraged Scholarship Program and the Governor's Success Scholarship Program.
The recipients of the $4,000 in Androscoggin Valley Hospital Awards are
Misty Gagne, Stephanie Franz, Zachary Erickson, Karen Flint, Rene Lebel,
and Valerie Smith.
In memory of their former colleague, the Nursing faculty awarded a scholarship in the name of Terrie Judge. The Terrie Judge Memorial Award was presented to Kimberly Force.
Vera Smith presented $4,500 in scholarships to students on behalf of the Edgar C. Smith Memorial Award. Recipients of the award are Kimiko Aldrich, Fred Baez,
Rebecca Shatney, Colette Haywood, Sarah Armstrong, and Pamela Webster.
In addition, Mrs. Smith presented the Vera Smith Academic Achievement Award to Margaret Gaughan.
The winner of this year's Paula Drouin Memorial Award was Jamie Garrow who received $1000 towards her continuing studies at NHCTC.
The Kiwanis Club was able to make $3,500 in scholarships available this year. The recipients of this year's Kiwanis scholarships at NHCTC are Tamara Allen, Lisa Tavares, Jennifer Douglas, Lisa Tupick, Arlene Reindeau, and Sherry Hilton.
An additional $3,750 was awarded as Governor's Success Scolarship Awards and the recipients are Susanne Rano, Gail Beroney, Jamie Croteau, Meghan Dupuis, LeeAnn Nystrom, Katrina Allin, Mellissa Rich, and Colleen Valleire.
Following the academic awards, the participants in NHCTC's athletic programs received a number of awards.
Robbie Desilets and Gary Lamontagne were co-recipients of the David Lamontage Award.
Student/athlete Jonathan Poulin received the Coach's Award for Hockey.
At the end of the awards presentations Coach Danny Arquin made a special and very moving presentation when he announced that the college would retire the jersey of Derek S. Hodgeman, a former NHCTC hockey playFollowing the ceremonies those in attendance were treated to refreshments.er who died in a boating accident. Derek's parents were on hand to accept a plague in their son's memory. His jersey will be hung in the College's awards cabinet.
