The New Hampshire Community College at Berlin is pleased to award a $500 Non-Traditional Student scholarship to Rachel E. Dandeneau of Dummer.
Dandeneau is currently enrolled in the Environmental Science program, and also serves as a student representative on the N.H. Community Technical College System Board of Trustees. According to Dandeneau, it is not so out of the ordinary for a woman to desire to become an environmental scientist. "Science has always been a favorite subject. In high school, environmental science became an obsession," admits Dandeneau. Her goal is to become a high school science teacher. She plans to continue her education at Lyndon State College. Dandeneau hopes to be a role model for other women and girls to look up to, and eventually pass on her knowledge of environmental issues on to the next generation.
Sheldon Towne, an environmental science professor who is also is department chair of Environmental and Computer Technology, recommended Dandeneau for the scholarship. "Whether involved in class assignments, lab exercises, or field work, Rachel's performance has been exemplary. She has excelled in all areas of academia that I have been witness to," said Towne.
The Environmental Science program is part of the College's Spatial Information Technology department that also offers Associate Degree programs in Surveying Technology and Geographic Information Systems.
