Local Authors/Educators Write New Series

Craig and Katie Doherty have been associated with the local school systems and the NH Community Technical College-Berlin for years now, but what you may not know is that they are actually published authors with thirty-nine history/reference books written since 1988. Katie is the librarian at the Guy Fortier Library at CCSNH-Berlin. Craig is a former high school English teacher and adjunct faculty member at the community college.

Their story begins when they moved from New Hampshire to New Mexico following a promising teaching opportunity, which led them to the Zuni Indian reservation. While out west, they experienced a type of life different from how we live in the North Country. After five years, the Dohertys decided it was time to move back to New England, and as they were leaving, a friend from the Zuni tribe jokingly asked Craig to write a story about them. Little did they know at the time, this joke would change their lives forever.

When they returned to the North Country, the Dohertys began writing about Native American tribes. With Craig having majored in history and English, and Katie having majored in anthropology and history, writing about people in history made sense. Katie said that working with her husband is not nearly as difficult as you may think. "We play off of each other's strengths and weaknesses." She also mentioned that they are beginning work on another series for Facts On File, "A set of 10 books about Native Americans, categorized by region as opposed to by tribe as our earlier books were organized."

Since they began, the Dohertys have written several books about Native Americans, a series entitled "Building America," and even a book on Arnold Schwarzenegger. The couple most recently wrote a series of hard cover illustrated books about the 13 colonies. Some of their books have been required reading in school systems, including New York state. Their newest books, a series on the Thirteen Colonies, published by Facts On File, are available as a set or individually -- check with your local bookstore and on the Internet. A few of the books are also available at the College's library, which is open to the public.
