Culinary Instructor Wins Ice Carving Competition
Steve Griffiths of Berlin,
NH, recently won the ice sculpture competition at the New Hampshire Lodging and Restaurant Association Trade Show. The
competition was organized by NH Chefs, Inc., and was hosted at the Verizon Center in Manchester, NH. Competitors were given
3 hours to carve a 300 lb block of ice, using power tools the likes of chain saws, sanders, and die grinders. Among the
judges were Steve Rose, a two time national ice sculpture champion. Competitors were judged upon American Culinary
Federation guidelines, which emphasized creativity, artistic detail, as well as the use of the complete ice block. The
winning sculpture was a musical abstract, comprised of a bass instrument being held by a male, with musical notes streaming
from the side. Also in the top three were Tim Pierce (2nd) of the Balsams Grand Resort Hotel, and Dave Soha (3rd) from
southern NH. Cash prizes went to the top three competitors. Steve is Professor of Culinary Arts at NH Community Technical
College/Berlin, and teaches ice sculpture as part of the Associate Degree program. He is a member of the National Ice
Carving Association, and has competed in and won several competitions over the past 10 years.
