High School Students in College
Thanks to a grant written by New Hampshire Community College-Berlin instructors Rick Alger
and Marion Schafer, a number of area high school students have had the opportunity to take a College
Composition course while still in high school. The grant was funded by the New Hampshire
Charitable Foundation/Northern New Hampshire Foundation and pays tuition and book costs for the
students. Over the two years of the grant, students from Gorham, Groveton, and North Stratford have
taken advantage of the scholarships. Schafer stated that a variety of distance learning techniques
have been used with the students in Groveton and North Stratford, while students from Gorham have
joined composition classes given through the CCSNH-Berlin Division of Continuing Education at the
Berlin Campus. Four Gorham students, Craig McCauley, Lindsey Theriault, Lee Anne Bolash, and
Tiffany Kennison, are currently taking a weekly College Composition course that will give them a
head start on their college studies whether they attend CCSNH-Berlin or transfer the credits to
another college.
