CCSNH-Berlin Graduates 140 in 40th Commencement Exercises

On Friday night, May 18, family and friends of CCSNH-Berlin's class of 2007 braved the cool, damp weather to witness the achievements of 140 graduates. Protected from the elements by a large, white tent, some onlookers covered themselves in blankets, but still wore smiles on their faces and carried cameras in their hands as nothing was going to prevent them from watching their loved ones graduate.

CCSNH-Berlin's President, Katharine Eneguess, began the ceremony by offering congratulations to the graduates and wishing them well in their future endeavors. David Roberts, Student Senate President, spoke about the many contributions that the Class of 2007 has made to the community including filling local food pantries and raising money for the fight against cancer. He also spoke about the book voucher system for students who didn’t have enough cash to purchase books. Sabrina Delorge, Phi Theta Kappa President, spoke about the hallmarks of the honor society and how the graduates should continue on with their education or in their professional lives remembering these values as they will help them achieve success.

President Eneguess introduced the ceremony's guest speaker, Dr. Donald P. Wharton, former President of Plymouth State University. CCSNH-Berlin has worked closely with PSU to develop a pilot program that allows CCSNH-Berlin graduates to continue on to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Childhood Studies from PSU while taking all their courses without leaving the Berlin campus. Dr. Wharton gave the graduates lots of advice as they continue on from NHCTC. He told them to be persistent, be open to opportunity, and be ready for life's twists and turns. He also reminded them that they should remember their homes, stay close to the natural world and be clear about what their values are. "Responsibility for your happiness is your own," he advised them, wishing them success for the future.

Several awards were presented, including the Commissioner's Award for Teaching Excellence to Nancy Smith, RN, BSN, MED, Professor of Nursing; the Commissioner's Award for Service Excellence to Jeanne Allain, Secretary to the Vice President of Academic Affairs; and the President's Award for the graduate with the highest grade point average to Wayne Ainsworth. Special mention was given to Jonathan Jones, whose grade point average was a mere tenth of a point less than Ainsworth's. Sr. Monique Therriault, RSM, was given an Honorary Degree for her numerous contributions to the community.

The commencement ceremony was followed by a reception in the College cafeteria.
