The New Hampshire Community College is pleased to announce Frank Clulow as the new Vice President of Academic and Community Affairs. Clulow has vacated his previous position as the Professor of Applied Engineering Technology at the college, a department he was a part of for 12 years.
Born in England, Clulow finished school at the young age of 15 and served a 6-year apprenticeship in machining that included course work at a technical college. "I remember in the last week of school the assistant headmaster talking to a group of us about our plans for the future. He was sure to tell us that none of us would become jet pilots, as we were not smart enough. He explained that we need to keep our goals reasonable." As he continued his schooling, Clulow carried this childhood memory with him as motivation to achieve his goals. In 1966, Clulow moved to Massachusetts from England and worked in various manufacturing facilities in the Boston area. In 1978, he began his own business producing mechanical component parts for the aerospace and medical industries. He soon realized that because he ran his own business he could create a flexible schedule that would allow him to begin taking classes. However, after starting his family, it became too hard to juggle his family and a business, so Clulow put schooling on hold and moved his family from Massachusetts to the North Country to provide a better way of life. A few years later, after his first child had finished high school, he was once again provided the opportunity to begin taking classes towards his degree.
Clulow first received his Associate Degree in Liberal Arts, and soon realized that there were programs available that would allow him to complete his Bachelors Degree with his experience in the workforce counting as credits. Soon after, while still living in Lisbon, Clulow noticed an ad in the local newspaper for an employment opportunity at NHCTC in Berlin. Seeing this as a way for him to fulfill his dream of becoming a teacher, Clulow applied, and was given the position. He began by teaching only a few classes; his mentor Hartson Brown took on a heavy teaching load to allow Clulow time to become comfortable with his new role in the classroom. "This concern for my well being was key to my success and I am grateful to this day," said Clulow. Eventually he took on more classes and earned a Masters degree in Education. When his mentor retired several years later, Clulow become the head of the Applied Engineering Technology Department.
"When this position as VP of academic and community affairs opened, I felt it was the next step for me. I am thrilled to remain a part of the college at this exciting time," said Clulow. "At the moment, NHCTC in Berlin is well positioned to help with workforce training. New technologies are being developed to enhance productivity in many traditional fields of endeavor," said Clulow. Employability will depend on the availability of courses to upgrade skills and this college is well suited to assist people with change, he concluded.
