The New Hampshire Community College in Berlin is pleased to announce a new addition to the nursing program, Emily MacDonald. Emily began instructing at NHCTC on September 6 and is excited about her position with the college. Crossing over from her previous position as a nurse in obstetrics, Emily saw the teaching position as a welcomed change. "A classroom environment is somewhat predictable and controllable, whereas at the hospital you never know what's coming. I look at this opportunity as endless, limitless," said MacDonald.
MacDonald is no stranger to the North Country. She moved to Berlin in 1987 after receiving her Bachelor Degree in Nursing at Fitchburg State in Massachusetts, and began working at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital. After working at AVH in various positions, she went back to graduate school at the University of Rhode Island in 1999 for her Masters of Science degree with a focus in nurse-midwifery.
After receiving her Masters, MacDonald interviewed throughout the northeast for jobs. In 2002, MacDonald excitedly returned to Berlin and began a job at St. Luke's Medical Center, and worked with Dr. Beauboeuf until June of 2003. From there she worked at Coös County Family Health as a staff nurse, but returned to Massachusetts to work as a certified nurse-midwife.
Realizing that she wanted to return to stay in Northern New Hampshire, MacDonald began work in obstetrics in 2005 at AVH in Berlin. When the opening became available at NHCTC, MacDonald realized that is where she belonged. "When you are nursing, you are always teaching, whether it be staff, patients or their family members; I wanted to take this opportunity to teach those who were interested in pursuing the field as a career," said MacDonald. Emily is the first instructor at NHCTC with a strong background in obstetrics, which will prove to be a great addition to the already strong program. By the end of their freshman year, MacDonald's students will have gained the basic skills necessary to carry on their second year as nursing students.
