Second year automotive students at Berlin High School will soon have the opportunity to earn college credits while enrolled in high school. The New Hampshire Community College-Berlin will be offering their Running Start program to second year automotive high school students interested in the Automotive Technology field, with a newly designed course entitled Introduction to Auto Service. In their discussions, NHCTC educator Al Host and Berlin High School teacher Al Wheeler established that competencies in the NHCTC Introduction to Auto Service course are covered in the two-year Berlin High automotive program. Students enrolling in this Running Start option will complete their coursework during the regular school day at the high school, and earn three college credits for a fee of $100, a huge savings over the regular cost of a course at the college.
"This is a great opportunity for senior high school automotive students who desire to continue their automotive training. We look forward to working with students who are interested in getting a jump on their post-secondary automotive careers by taking advantage of this unique program," said Wheeler.
According to Host, the automotive Running Start opportunity is a NHCTC System initiative involving Community Technical Colleges and high schools across the state. "This is a great example of how educational institutions can and should be working together. It's a win-win situation for everyone involved. It is an introduction for students to our automotive program, as well as an opportunity for them to earn college credits," says Host. Furthermore, the credits earned through this Automotive Running Start opportunity at Berlin High School can be transferred to another NH Community Technical College automotive program, provided the student earns a minimum grade of "C."
Other courses offered through the Running Start program include Algebra and Trigonometry I and II, Statistics, Calculus, Psychology, Sociology, America in the 20th Century, Chemistry, Medical Terminology, Management, and Computer Networking I and II.
