The rain clouds broke Friday afternoon, just in time for the 2005 New Hampshire Community College graduation ceremony. Eighty-nine students along with their family and friends joined under the massive tent to celebrate and honor the students who have earned their degrees in various fields. The ceremony began with a welcome by Martha Laflamme, VP of Student Affairs, who assured the graduates that, "This is the beginning of a new adventure." Other guest speakers included Claudette Mahar member of the Board of Directors for the college, Matthew Emery, President of the Student Senate, and Melanie Gleason, Phi Theta Kappa President.
Katharine Eneguess, President of NHCTC and guest speaker at the ceremony, addressed the graduates, "Here you are. Congratulations." She spoke to the students about life and lessons learned, "This is just a moment during your journey ... part of your story is now part of our story at the college. You have inspired us to challenge not only future students but ourselves as well." She finished her speech by giving the advice, "Have a vision of what you want to achieve and move towards it."
Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Charles Annal, presented this year's Teachers Excellence Awards, the annual awards given at graduation ceremony where faculty write a letter of nomination for a faculty member and all those nominated are voted on by peers. The award recognizes excellence in and beyond the classroom. This year's recipients were Deborah Stewart, Professor of Teacher Preparation and Norine Van Leuven, Nursing Professor. The Service Excellence Award which honors a staff member for their hard work and dedication was presented to Gloria Tremblay, assistant to the President. At the graduation ceremony, the student with the highest cumulative grade point average in an Associate Degree program receives the President's Award. The student must complete a minimum of 64 credits at this college, exclusive of transfer credits and waivers. Competition for this award has traditionally been very strong, with students winning by fractions of a point. The award this year was presented to Karen Bunnel of Guildhall, VT.
