Mapping at Harvard
Whitley completed her GIS degree in May 2002. She was awarded an internship from the Geospatial Information Technology Association and spent a year working for the James Sewall Company in Maine. Whitley is currently working at the Harvard Map Library where she is involved in a three year grant to load data--both vector and image--into the Harvard Geospatial Library , which is a web-based service that allows both Harvard affiliates and the public to access data. "I have been working with ArcSDE and ArcInfo primarily. I load vector data from CD sets (e.g. census/Tiger) and I georeference historical images from the Map Collection, so if someone does a spatial search through the web interface, both vector and historical images will come up. It's not a flawless system, but if it were, my job might be boring. I am enjoying it!"
About her education at NHCTC-Berlin, Whitley had this to say: "NHCTC's GIS Program provided me with the incredible opportunity to get a personalized and hands-on education in a field that is continuously growing and evolving, with numerous avenues for jobs. My professors were all experts in their fields and had extensive practical knowledge - they really made the difference between an average education and a fantastic one. My education at NHCTC is one of the best decisions I ever made for my career."
